MAQS and Formic Pro are both brood treatments and because 80% of the mite population is found under the brood cap, the strips are placed directly on the top bars of the brood chamber. While the bees fan the vapours, the formic acid molecules are small enough to penetrate the thin wax capping layer and the cocoon of the developing baby bee to reach the mites. Most other mitecides kill phoretic (dispersal phase) mites on adult bees by contact. Bees must brush up against or walk over an impregnated strip or gel solution.
